Most visitors land at Keflavík on the Reykjanes peninsula, about 50 kilometres from Reykjavík on Route 41. The terminal is the usual first room in the country. Wind on the peninsula is not a surprise. It is the climate.

Coach as a pattern
An airport coach, often called Flybus, runs to the BSÍ terminal in Reykjavík and onward to hotels. City buses also run the peninsula. That is the pattern. We do not sell a seat and we do not freeze a timetable on this page. Check the operator the morning you fly.
Domestic air
Reykjavík has a small domestic airport close to the centre. Flights to Akureyri skip the ring if you only have days in the north. Useful if the south already took the week. Not a substitute for a car once you want Mývatn or the coast.

The car as the usual tool
Outside the capital, the island is driven. One-lane bridges, wind, and fuel gaps apply as soon as you leave town. Headlights on. Gravel shoulders. If you drive the north, Route 1 now uses the tunnel east of Akureyri. The old pass is the weather alternative. Read the tunnel note, and the fuller version with the north.
We do not hire cars and we do not take a cut. F-roads need a different plate and a different skill. That belongs on the highlands page.
